Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook

The 21st annual Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Exposure Camp concluded Tuesday at Viterbo University in La Crosse.

Following are some end-of-the-camp news and notes.

A total lof 120 players at the WBY Camp were divided into 12 different teams. Following are the MVPs for each of the teams at camp as selected by the camp coaches:

Jared Henning, 6-4, WF, Sr., Kettle Moraine Lutheran
A physical, productive wing player who gets to the basket and completes plays … Starting quarterback on the Kettle Moraine Lutheran football team ... Can guard on the perimeter or use his size to battle taller opponents in the post ... First-team all-league performer in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference as a junior ... Enters senior season as a three-year starter for coach Todd Jahns ... Competes with the Wisconsin Blizzard -- Schneider program on the travel-team circuit.

Ethan Bublitz, 6-2, PG, Sr., Kettle Moraine Lutheran
A smooth, skilled backcourt performer who has the size and strength to get where he wants on the court .… A good perimeter shooter who also likes to complete plays with aggressive moves to the basket ... Won the three-point shooting contest at the WBY Camp ... A two-time first-team all-league performer in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference ... Plays with the Wisconsin Blizzard -- Schneider squad on the travel-team circuit.

Mitch Pfeifer, 6-3, WF, Sr., Kettle Moraine
An athletic wing player with good size, strength and jumping ability … Very aggressive off the dribble, but also a capable perimeter shooter ... Excellent student who earned second-team all-league honors as a junior while helping Kettle Moraine capture the Classic Eight Conference championship ... Plays with the Wisconsin Swing -- Smith travel-team program.

James Fox, 6-2, WG, Sr., Edgerton
A streak perimeter shooter who can get on a roll from downtown … Possesses a quick release on his jump shot ... Has improved his ball handling and passing skills and can now play either guard position ... Earned honorable mention all-league laurels as a junior for an Edgerton squad that won the Northern Division title of the Rock Valley Conference ... Competes with the Wisconsin Dynasty program on the travel-team circuit.

Michael Vidmar, 6-1, PG, Sr., Muskego
Aggressive and strong lead guard who gets into the heart of a defense off the dribble and can finish or find open teammates ... Good perimeter shooter as well and has a quick release ... Earned honorable mention all-league honors in the Classic Eight Conference as a junior ... Competes with the DTA -- Devin Harris Superstars on the club circuit.

Ty Horkan, 6-1, PG/WG, Sr., Reedsburg
Battled injuries for much of his junior season at Reedsburg  … Good size and strength and can play either guard position ... Made three-point jump shots and also filled the lanes and scored in transition at the WBY Camp ... Not exceptionally quick off the dribble, but gets where he wants to because of size and pysical strength ... Plays for the Wisconsin Starz Elite on the travel-team circuit.

Collin Kennedy, 6-4, PF, Sr., Onalaska Luther
Hard-working forward who runs the floor and finishes in the post exceptionally well ... Working on his ball handling, passing and perimeter shooter skills and is showing improvement in those areas ... Good athlete with excellent physical strength ... First-team all-league pick in Coulee Conference as a junior ... Competes with the Wisconsin Playmakers -- Petersen squad on the travel-team circuit.

Drew Fredrickson, 6-1, G, Sr., Mount Horeb
The unofficial Most Valuable Player of the entire camp ... Elite level basketball IQ and an under-rated athlete ... Rebounds, passes, handles the ball against pressure and can shoot it from deep ... Makes winning plays for himself and his teamamtes ... Unselfish player who uses his physical strength and smarts on the defensive end of the floor ... First-team all-league pick in the Badger South as a junior ... Competes with the Wisconsin Academy -- Robinson squad on the club circuit.

Harrison Cleary, 6-1, PG, Jr., Oak Creek
A two-year varsity letter winner entering his junior year at Oak Creek ... Very skilled and confident lead guard who makes plays for himself and his teammates ... Good perimeter shooter and owner of a quick first step to the basket ... Good anticipation on defense and a communicator on both ends of the court ... Competes with the Playground Elite -- Hansen team on the travel-team scene.

Jordan Chester, 6-0, G, Sr., Madison East
A returning starter for Madison East who averaged 7.0 points per game as a junior for coach Matt Miota ... Good perimeter shooter and offensive player ... Does an excellent job of communicating with his teammates and leading ... Improved defender who is aggressive taking the ball to the basket ... Competes for the Wisconsin Starz Elite squad on the travel-team circuit.

Tre Borland, 6-3, WG, Sr., Whitnall
One of the more pleasant surprises at the camp … Athletic, quick and strong left-handed wing guard who gets to the basket ... Lone returning starter for a Whitnall program that went 11-13 a year ago under coach Steve Kujawa ... Averaged 8.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per outing as a junior ... Plays with the Wisconsin Flash on the travel-team circuit.

Ethan Willman, 6-2, WG, Sr., Two Rivers
Extremely athletic wing player who appears to be blossoming into a very good all-around basketball player .… Made three-point jump shots and used his quickness and strength to finish in the lane ... A second-team all-league pick in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference as a junior ... A member of the Wisconsin Blizzard -- Boots travel-team squad.

Ten additional players cited by team coaches who consistently played well included:

Blake Ehrke, 6-4, WG, Jr., Deerfield – The returning first-team all-league pick in the Southern Division of the Trailways Conference has excellent size and skill. Figures to blossom into an excellent collegiate prospect with additional weight and strength.

Max Wojcik, 6-0, PG, Sr., Brookfield Central – Playing behind talented players such as Riley LaChance and Brad Newman a year ago, Wojcik showed he has picked up some things from his teammates by playing very well at the WBY Camp. He can handle the ball, make shots and run a team very well.

Tre-vone Irby, 5-10, PG, Jr., Madison East – Irby is a very quick point guard who does an excellent job of running his team. Communicates well with his teammates and can push the ball in transition.

Derek Paulson, 6-3, G/F, Jr., Lodi – The lone returning starter for a Lodi program that finished 26-2 a year ago, losing to Brown Deer in the WIAA Division 3 state-title game. Paulson has a sweet jump shot from beyond the arc and also does a fine job of using his size to get to the basket.

Erik Tetschlag, 6-3, WG, Sr., Sheboygan South – Tetschlag had a very strong camp, making shots from distance while also using his speed and strength to finish at the basket. Appears to be primed for a big senior season for coach Mike Rank at Sheboygan South.

Riley Haas, 6-3, WG, Sr., Ripon – Smart, skilled wing prospect who cuts to the basket, finishes and make foul shots, Haas is a key player for a young and talented squad at Ripon next season.

Justin Thomas, 6-2, WG, Sr., Arcadia – A second-team all-league pick in the Coulee Conference as a junior, Thomas is a solid all-around player who can score off the dribble as well as from the perimeter.

Conner Lemmens, 6-3, WG, Jr., Green Bay Preble – Lemmens is a skilled wing player who can knock down perimeter jump shots. His length makes it difficult for opponents to guard his jump shot.

Brian Studer, 6-2, WG, Sr., Germantown – A good perimeter shooter with size and strength, Studer figures to be among the leaders for a Germantown team that has won the last three WIAA Division 1 state titles.

Caleub Watkins, 5-11, PG, Sr., Eleva-Strum – A quick, steady point guard who does a very good job of making sure his teammates get touches on the offensive end of the floor. Good scorer who earned first-team all-league recognition in the Small Schools Division of the Dairyland Conference.

Sophomores to watch from camp included:

Matthew Myers, 5-9, PG, Soph., Barneveld – A second-team all-league pick in the Eastern Division of the Six Rivers Conference as a freshman, Myers competes with poise, confidence and very good skill. He handles the ball, passes it well and has a good-looking perimeter jump shot.

Shayne Frost, 5-10, PG, Soph., Hudson – Frost and junior Matthew Sparstad figure to form a dynamic backcourt combination for coach Jason Swavely at Hudson over the next couple of seasons. Excellent ball handler and very good passer who can also make jump shots.

Erik Christopherson, 5-11, PG, Soph., Melrose-Mindoro – The cousin to former Aquinas and Iowa State shooting guard Scott Christopherson, Erik is a scoring lead guard who can make plays. He scored 40 points in a victory over Blair-Taylor last winter.

Tyler Hughes, 6-1, WG, Soph., Onalaska – Hughes is a very skilled offensive player who can hurt opponents from the perimeter or off the dribble. Does an excellent job of moving without the basketall and making himself difficult to guard.

Alec Fruin, 6-2, G, Soph., Beloit Turner – A wing guard who is starting to handle the ball and play as a point guard, Fruin has a very promising future for coach Ken Watkins and Beloit Turner. He can guard on the perimeter with his length and quickness while also getting to the basket and finishing through contact.

Nate Verstegen, 6-5, F, Soph., Sun Prairie – Played on the varsity squad at Sun Prairie as a freshman and saw significant playing time for coach Jeff Boos. Can handle the ball away from the basket and battle inside for rebounds and putbacks. Good looking prospect who figures to develop into a solid collegiate prospect over the next year or so.

Joey Reader, 6-6, F, Soph., Appleton West -- An athletic and long forward who runs the floor, battles for loose balls and can score and rebound in traffic. A left-handed prospect who figures to be a mainstay in the Appleton West lineup over the next three seasons.

Brett Frieder, 6-2, WG, Soph., Bay Port -- Physically strong wing prospect who does a bit of everything. He can rebound, score in the lane or step outside and make jump shots. Saw signficiant playing time on the varsity for coach Nate Rykal at Bay Port last winter.

Owen Hamilton, 6-10, C, Soph., Prescott -- The sky is the limit for Hamilton, who has a very strong work ethic and gives forth sincere effort every second he is on the court. Can score in the post and uses his height and size (250 pounds) to overpower opponents in the lane.

Eddie Muench, 5-10, WG, Soph., Ripon -- Muench is a very good long-distance shooter with a quick release. He will do an excellent job of spacing the defense for Ripon because he can snap off and connect from three-point range in the blink of an eye.

The three-on-three tournament was held at camp on Tuesday and the team of Dylan Weninger of Westby, Jason Palesse of West Allis Hale, Harrison Cleary of Oak Creek, Joey Archer of West Allis Hale and Tre Borland of Whitnall won the championship.

The three-point shooting contest was won by senior Ethan Bublitz of Kettle Moraine Lutheran.
