Your official guide to the 16th annual Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout, scheduled for December 28-29-30 at Concordia University in Mequon:

Five Things To Watch …

1. De Pere vs. Wisconsin Lutheran – The top-ranked team in Division 1 (De Pere) takes on the second-ranked team in Division 2 (Wisconsin Lutheran) in this marquee matchup at 7:00 p.m. on December 28. De Pere is coming off a 98-76 victory over highly regarded Kimberly, a game in which standout junior guard John Kinziger (6-0) scored 35 points. The Redbirds led by just three points at halftime, but blitzed the Papermakers in the second half. Sophomore center Will Hornseth (6-8) had 14 points and senior Jack Jorgensen (6-2) added 23 for De Pere. Wisconsin Lutheran is getting 18.8 ppg and 7.2 rpg from star sophomore Kon Knueppel (6-5), who already owns NCAA Division I scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, Illinois, Marquette, Minnesota, Texas A&M and Wisconsin, among others. Senior Jordan Glenn (5-11) is contributing 15.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg and 2.8 apg. Glenn is the player who collapsed on the floor during a game last season and was cleared to play prior to the start of this season.

2. Undefeated teams – It's still early in the season, but no less than nine of the 32 teams taking part in the Rick Majerus WBY Shootout come into the prestigious event with unbeaten records. That list includes some of the most impressive teams in the state, including De Pere (6-0), Wisconsin Lutheran (6-0), Arrowhead (6-0), Columbus Catholic (7-0), St. Thomas More (8-0), Sheboygan Lutheran (8-0), Franklin (5-0), Cuba City (7-0) and Lake Country Lutheran (7-0). Five others have just one loss. That list includes Onalaska (3-1), Brookfield Central (5-1), Pius XI Catholic (6-1), Ashwaubenon (4-1) and DeForest (6-1). At least two of the unbeatens will leave the WBY Shootout with a loss as De Pere plays Wisconsin Lutheran, and Sheboygan Lutheran takes on Lake Country Lutheran.

3. 13 ranked teams in WisSports.net Coaches Poll – Two top-ranked teams and 13 ranked programs overall are scheduled to participate in the 32-team WBY Shootout. At the Division 1 level, top-ranked De Pere, fourth-ranked Brookfield Central, eighth-ranked Arrowhead, and 10th-ranked Menomonee Falls will compete. Two of the top 10 teams in Division 2 will participate, including second-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran and fourth-ranked DeForest. Among Division 3 schools, top-ranked Lake Country Lutheran, fourth-ranked Catholic Memorial and fifth-ranked St. Thomas More will play. In Division 4, second-ranked Sheboygan Lutheran and third-ranked Cuba City will participate. And in Division 5, second-ranked Columbus Catholic and 10th-ranked Newman Catholic will play.

4. Senational Sophomores – Six of the top 10 players in the current WisSports.net Player Rankings for the class of 2024 will participate in the Rick Majerus WBY Shootout. All six already are earning plenty of recruiting interest from NCAA Division I programs. Those six players include top-ranked Kon Knueppel (6-5) of Wisconsin Lutheran, fifth-ranked Amari McCottry (6-5) of St. Thomas More, sixth-ranked Jaquan Johnson (5-10) of Pius XI Catholic, seventh-ranked Will Hornseth (6-8) of De Pere, ninth-ranked Jack Daugherty (6-7) of Brookfield Central and 10th-ranked Sekou Konneh (6-7) of St. Thomas More.
