Your official guide to the 12th annual Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout, scheduled for December 27-28-29 at Concordia University in Mequon:

Five Things To Watch …

1. Kaukauna vs. La Crosse Central – The Ghosts are the defending WIAA Division 2 state champions and beat La Crosse Central twice a year ago, including a 72-45 whipping in the semifinals of the state tournament. This time around, however, it appears Central may have the upper hand as the Red Raiders have crushed their five opponents by an average margin of 31.8 points per contest. University of Wisconsin recruit Kobe King, an athletic and skilled 6-foot-4 wing player, is one of the top candidates for the Mr. Basketball award and currently leads Central in scoring at 21.6 ppg. Senior point guard Bailey Kale (6-0), like King a four-year varsity player for coach Todd Fergot, is headed to NCAA Division II Minnesota-Duluth in the fall and is averaging 16.6 ppg. Sophomore Noah Parcher (6-0) is contributing 9.4 ppg for the defending Mississippi Valley Conference champions. Kaukauna is currently playing without senior wing Adam Smith (6-2), who is recovering from a foot injury. Smith averaged 17.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg as a junior and has also signed with DII Minnesota-Duluth. The Ghosts are led by junior point guard Jordan McCabe (6-0), a three-year starter for coach Mike Schalow and a West Virginia recruit. McCabe is averaging 22.2 ppg and can make shots from well beyond the three-point arc. Other key players for the Ghosts include seniors Brad Voster (6-1) and Bailey McDaniel (6-2) along with promising juniors Eric Carl (6-4) and Dylan Kurey (6-7). These are unquestionably two of the top teams in Wisconsin, regardless of division.

2. Tyler Herro of Whitnall – One of the state's top juniors, Herro committed to the University of Wisconsin on September 12 and is off to a terrific start for coach Steve Kujawa and the Falcons. In a recent 78-74 Woodland Conference victory over Brown Deer, Herro scored 36 points and made five three-point shots. The skilled, long and athletic 6-foot-4 wing guard is averaging 27.1 points and 4.7 assists for a Whitnall squad that has recorded six straight victories after opening the season with a close loss to Milwaukee Destiny. Whitnall, which plays Kaukauna in the WBY Shootout, is one of the top teams in Wisconsin at the Division 2 level.

3. 14 ranked teams in WisSports.net Coaches Poll – Three top ranked teams and 14 ranked programs overall are scheduled to participate in the 32-team WBY Shootout. At the Division 1 level, top-ranked Oshkosh North, fourth-ranked Kimberly, fifth-ranked Brookfield Central, seventh-ranked Milwaukee Riverside and ninth-ranked Bay Port will compete. Seven of the top 10 teams in Division 2 will participate, including top-ranked Kaukauna, second-ranked La Crosse Central, fourth-ranked Cedarburg, sixth-ranked Whitnall, seventh-ranked Beaver Dam, ninth-ranked Milwaukee Pius XI Catholic and 10th-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran. Other ranked teams taking part include the state's top-ranked Division 3 team -- Ripon -- and the state's third-ranked Division 4 squad -- The Prairie School of Racine.

4. Oshkosh North vs. Milwaukee Riverside – Oshkosh North sits atop the WisSports.net Coaches Poll with a 5-0 record while Riverside came into the season ranked No. 1 by the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook. North boasts several potential scholarship players, including senior guards Philip Flory (6-5) and Shane Wissink (6-0) along with junior wing Tyrese Haliburton (6-5). Junior guard Quincy Anderson (6-2) is also performing very well for the Spartans. Riverside's lone loss on the campaign came to Milwaukee Marquette with standout junior point guard Carlos Curtis (6-2) out of the lineup. Curtis and senior wing Terrence Lewis (6-6) form a prolific duo for the Tigers, who are favored to successfully defend their Milwaukee City Conference championship.
