Final Pool Standings

Pool E – Mineral Point 4-0, Barneveld 2-2, Catholic Central 2-2, Cudahy 2-2, Racine Lutheran 2-2, Montello 1-3, Salam 1-3.

Most Valuable Player

Trevor Wendhausen, 6-1, Sr., G, Mineral Point
Coach Dan Burreson enters his 19th year as head coach at Mineral Point with one of his most talented and experienced teams. Four starters from a club that went 18-6 return for the Pointers, led by Wendhausen, a skilled wing prospect who led Mineral Point in scoring (14.3 ppg) and finished third in rebounding (4.7 rpg) last winter. In Burlington, Wendhausen proved to be a lights-out long-distance shooter. He finished the Pointers four games with 12 three-point baskets. In addition to his accuracy beyond the arc, Wendhausen showed the ability to get to the basket off the dribble and either finish or earn a trip to the foul line.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Nick Audi, 6-2, Jr., WG, Cudahy

Audi has a strong presence on the court, thanks to his ability to knock down perimeter jump shots or attack the basket with his size and strength. He finished the four games of the tournament with 10 three-point baskets, but was most effective when he mixed in short jumpers and drives to the hoop with his long-shooting prowess.

Abdella Badwon, 6-1, Sr., WF, Salam

Badwon has an unusual release point on his perimeter jump shot, but the results are usually positive as he has a knack for making shots from beyond the arc. He also showed the ability to score in traffic, using his quick jumping ability and length to beat opponents to the ball and finish in the lane.

Carter Daniels, 5-8, Sr., PG, Montello

Daniels is a quick, intelligent lead guard with deep shooting range and the ability to get around defenders off the dribble. He scored at a high clip in the Hilltoppers games on Sunday after missing Saturday’s contests. He connected on five triples in the second half and scored 17 points in a 40-39 victory over Cudahy, and had four triples and 18 points in a loss to Catholic Central.

Jose Lorenzana, 5-8, Sr., PG, Cudahy

An exceptionally quick, aggressive and strong defender, Lorenzana made things happen in a positive way for the Packers. His ability to put extreme pressure on the ball made things difficult for opponents and he was able to come up with several steals throughout the weekend.

Teagan Miles, 6-7, Sr., PF, Catholic Central

An outstanding wide receiver in football and pitcher in baseball, Miles is a strong three-sport athlete for the Hilltoppers. He runs the floor exceptionally well while also scoring from mid-range and in the post. He finished with 35 points in four games and displayed a nice shooting touch from the foul line. With added strength and weight and a bit more toughness, Miles could emerge as a very good collegiate prospect.

Brendan Naegeli, 5-11, Soph., G, Racine Lutheran

Naegeli showed plenty of versatility and court awareness for the Crusaders. He was able to play either guard spot and create some very good scoring opportunities for his teammates off of aggressive moves to the basket. He was also able to score from the perimeter while also playing strong defense.

Turner Poad, 5-10, Jr., G, Mineral Point
Poad teams with Sy Staver and Trevor Wendhausen to give Mineral Point an experienced, skilled backcourt trio. Like Staver and Wendhausen, Poad is a good shooter from three-point range. He averaged 7.0 ppg and 3.8 rpg as a sophomore and figures to be a key player for the Pointers in their quest to overtake Cuba City in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League next season.

Darren Schlaefer, 5-11, Jr., WG, Montello

Schlaefer actually played both guard spots for Montello over the weekend and was effective in getting places off the bounce. His combination of size, strength and aggressiveness are tough to deal with for opponents and his ability to score will be key for coach Matt Bredesen and Montello next season.

Sy Staver, 6-0, Jr., G, Mineral Point

A two-year varsity letter winner entering his junior season, Staver has grown a few inches and added some muscle to his frame over the past 12 months. That is good news for Mineral Point, which figures to challenge Cuba City, Fennimore and Darlington for the title in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League in 2013-14. Staver is a good shooter from three-point range, but he can also get into the lane with the best of them. In four games, Staver had 21 free-throw attempts, making 15.

Jeremy Whitish, 6-0, Sr., WG, Barneveld

With his team trailing by two early in the second half against Salam, Whitish absolutely took over the game, scoring 18 points over the final 14 minutes of the contest to lead the Eagles to a 60-44 victory. Whitish knocked down threes, scored off the dribble and finished in transition to lead his team to the come-from-behind victory. An unselfish player who looks to involve his teammates, Whitish averaged 12.9 ppg as a junior while playing for his father, Mike.

Notes
Senior Chanler Leonard (6-3) had some strong performances for Mineral Point, both in terms of scoring and rebounding. His size and ability to defend in the post will be paramount to the Pointers’ success in 2013-14 … Look for left-handed freshman point guard Matthew Myers (5-8) to potentially make an impact at Barneveld next season. The son of highly successful Barneveld girls’ basketball coach Jim Myers, Matthew Myers has excellent ball handling, passing and shooting skills … Josef Schaub (6-2) transferred into Salam School last January from Kansas City and had never played in an organized basketball game. He has come a long ways in a short time and he used his athleticism and instincts to score in the lane for the Stars, finishing with eight points in a loss to Barneveld … Catholic Central has a solid backcourt trio in senior Bailey Wright (6-2), junior Spencer Wilker (6-2) and sophomore Ben Heiligenthal (6-0). Wright, Wilker and Heiligenthal can score from downtown or take defenders off the bounce and get to the basket … Cudahy lost two games by a single point and was a couple shots away from finishing 4-0 in Burlington. The Packers got solid contributions in all four games from senior guard Tyler Fricke (6-1) … Racine Lutheran senior Chase Wember (6-3) gives the Crusaders great size and physical strength in the lane.
