Observations from the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Summer Tournament held in Plymouth July 20-22:

Pools A-B

Final Standings

Pool A – Fond du Lac 4-0, Sheboygan South 3-1, West Bend West 2-2, St. Thomas More 1-3, Cudahy 0-4.

Pool B – Kimberly 4-0, Plymouth 3-1, Marshfield 2-2, Milwaukee South Division 1-3, Manitowoc Lincoln 0-4.

Pool A vs. Pool B Championship Game – Fond du Lac 45, Kimberly 40.

Most Valuable Player

Max Schebel, 6-4, Sr., F, Fond du Lac

A difficult matchup for opponents because of his ability to score in the post or facing the basket, Schebel is a physically tough and skilled combination forward who led the Cardinals in scoring during the tournament at 13.6 ppg over five contests. He had his best game in the Pool A vs. Pool B title contest, scoring 18 points to lead the Cardinals past Fox Valley Association rival Kimberly.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Nick Audi, 6-3, Soph., WG, Cudahy

A varsity performer as a freshman for the Packers, Audi has an unorthodox shot from distance, but it went in far more than not in Plymouth. Audi has excellent size and strength for such a young player and figures to be vitally important to coach Nick Conrad and his rebuilding job at Cudahy.

Bryce Ebben, 5-8, Sr., PG, Kimberly
You don’t notice Ebben when he walks into a gym, but you certainly pay attention when he steps onto a basketball court and begins competing. A hard-nosed, aggressive point guard who uses his quickness and confidence to beat opponents off the dribble, Ebben was a key performer on both ends of the court all weekend for the Papermakers.

Owen Henriksen, 6-2, Sr., WG, Plymouth
Henriksen is a returning starter from a club that went 20-6 and lost to Kaukauna in a WIAA Division 2 sectional championship game last March. An aggressive wing guard, Henriksen is outstanding at getting into the lane and finishing or finding open teammates.

David Klink, 6-0, Sr., WG, Kimberly
Few players in Wisconsin take the ball to the basket with as much success as Klink, who uses an incredibly quick first step and his physical strength to repeatedly beat opponents off the dribble. Developing a consistent three-point shot to go along with his aggressive moves to the basket would certainly make him doubly difficult to guard during the 2012-13 season.

Shawn Luckette, 6-2, Sr., WG, Milwaukee South Division
An explosive and physically strong athlete who had several soaring drives along the baseline that he turned into highlight-reel dunks, Luckette is one of the elite players in the Milwaukee City Conference. He made three-point shots, got to the foul line and finished above the rim while also playing strong man-to-man defense.

Matt Schroeder, 6-1, Sr., WG, Sheboygan South
Schroeder is the top returning scorer for the Redwings and he was a solid offensive threat for coach Tim Schultz in Plymouth. He scored 16 points in a victory over West Bend West and was able to connect on shots from beyond the arc in multiple games.

Daymeann Stewart, 5-10, Jr., PG, St. Thomas More
A true point guard who handles the ball, locates open teammates and finds the bottom of the basket, Stewart is the engine that makes St. Thomas More go, especially on the offensive end of the court. He can push the ball in transition, makes good decisions and can use his quickness and strength to get to the hoop.

Cory Unger, 5-10, Sr., PG, Plymouth
Unger does a lot of things for the Panthers. He scores, he distributes, he defends and, most importantly, he competes and communicates on the court. A capable scorer from distance or off the dribble, Unger is also very good at finding his open post players off of strong moves into the lane.

Robert Windsor, 6-4, Soph., PF, Fond du Lac
Windsor did not play on the varsity squad at Fond du Lac as a freshman, but he appears to have a great shot at making a significant contribution for the Cardinals as a sophomore. A big, mobile power forward, Windsor scored with consistency around the basket, scoring four baskets in the lane in the title game vs. Kimberly.

Luke Zuiker, 6-4, Jr., G/F, Marshfield
Playing through an illness, Zuiker was solid in all aspects of the game for Marshfield. He was able to score from the perimeter and from mid-range while also using his length and jumping ability to grab rebounds on both ends of the court.

Team Champion

Fond du Lac
The Cardinals finished 5-13 in the Fox Valley Association and 8-15 overall a year ago, but Fond du Lac returns seven players who started at one time a year ago. Most expect Fond du Lac to move up in the league standings behind the return of talented players such as Schebel. classmate Logan Wendt and junior point guard Joe Schorse, who did not play in Plymouth. Toss in a talented trio of sophomore forwards in Brian Luteyn (6-4), Marcus Ruch (6-3) and Windsor and it’s easy to see why Fond du Lac could challenge Oshkosh North, Appleton West and Neenah for the top spot in the FVA.

Notes
Junior Kollin Neils (6-2) and seniors Jordan Mueller (6-4) and Kevin Friederichs (6-6) played well for Plymouth along with Henriksen and Unger … Senior forward Logan Wendt (6-4) of Fond du Lac showed his versatility by playing point guard for much of the weekend for the Cardinals … Senior forward Kolbe Ninehaus (6-4) had some strong moments in the lane for Kimberly, using his size and strength to outmuscle opponents for rebounds … Sophomores Ben Boots (6-0) and Austin Weyenberg (6-2) showed plenty of promise for coach Lucky Wurtz at Kimberly … Sophomore T.J. Pitch (5-11) is one of several underclassmen who figure to play key minutes for Sheboygan South this winter … Senior Luke Olson (6-1) and junior Alex Strege (6-5) played well for Marshfield … Seniors Tyrone Lewis (6-3) and Keyonte Bennett (5-11) had some strong showings for new St. Thomas More coach John Hoch … Senior A.J. Emerich (5-11) shot the ball extremely well for West Bend West, which played without junior twins Andrew (6-6) and Jacob (6-5) Duening … Senior guard Jeremy Tutas (5-10) also played very well for the Spartans … Manitowoc Lincoln was short-handed all weekend, but the Ships got some solid play from senior Kyle Hoffman (6-3) and promising sophomore Adam Bonk (5-10). Hoffman shot the ball from the perimeter, scored off the dribble and rebounded while Bonk did a good job of scoring from downtown and handling the ball against pressure defense.
