Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook

The second Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Exposure Camp of the summer concluded Tuesday at Viterbo University in La Crosse. Following are some end-of-the-camp news and notes.

Players at the WBY Camp were divided into 12 different teams. Following are the MVPs as selected by the camp coaches for each of the 12 teams at camp:

Noah Baryenbruch, 6-0, PG, Jr., River Valley
Smooth, intelligent lead guard who makes great decisions on the basketball court … Solid perimeter shooter and an outstanding passer … Plays hard on both ends of the court … First-team all-league pick as a sophomore in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference … Brother, Jacob, just finished a four-year career at Drake.

Alex Erickson, 6-1, WG, Jr., Darlington
An athletic and skilled wing guard who can make mid-range jump shots or get all the way to the rim … Earned first-team all-league honors as a sophomore in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League (SWAL) … Solid physical strength and ball handling skills.

Sam Gage, 6-6, WF, Sr., Waterloo
A versatile forward prospect who can play inside and outside … Good ball handler and long-range shooter … Also likes to post-up and play with his back to the basket … Good bounce and energy on defense … Earned first-team all-conference honors as a junior in the Southern Division of the Capitol Conference.

Dustin Helmenstine, 5-11, PG, Sr., Wisconsin Heights
One of the biggest surprises at camp … An intelligent point guard who does a good job of running his team … Earned honorable mention all-conference recognition in the Southern Division of the Capitol Conference as a junior … Solid student who figures to get on the radar for NCAA Division III schools across the state.

Jeff Hull, 6-5, PF, Sr., Madison East
A two-year varsity performer who figures to make a big contribution to a very good Madison East program as a senior … Competed hard on both ends of the court from the opening tip on Sunday to the final horn on Tuesday evening … Can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim and finish … Tough defender and excellent team leader.

Ryan Ledvina, 5-10, PG, Sr., La Crosse Central
A three-sport standout who uses his quickness and physical strength to get where he wants to on the basketball court … Also excels in football and baseball at Central … Streaky perimeter shooter who can get on a roll from downtown … Very aggressive taking the ball to the basket … Can take a hit and still finish due to his physical strength … A first-team all-league performer in the Mississippi Valley Conference as a junior.

Cody Odegaard, 6-2, WG, Sr., Poynette
Outstanding mid-range jump shooter … Puts the ball on the floor and either gets to the basket or pulls up for a short jumper … Long-range game is still developing … Earned first-team all-league honors in the Northern Division of the Capitol Conference in each of the past two seasons … Solid defender and competitor who figures to be on the recruiting radar for many schools in the coming months.

J.J. Panoske, 6-9, F, Jr., Brodhead
A skilled, long and active forward … Loves to take the three-point shot and is working hard to develop a post-up game as well … Needs to add weight and strength, but has improved by leaps and bounds over the last six months … Excellent shot-blocking skills … Has a scholarship offer from UW-Green Bay and figures to receive many more over the next 12 months … A first-team all-league performer as a sophomore in the Rock Valley Conference.

Nathan Radke, 6-1, PG/WG, Sr., Union Grove
Another pleasant surprise at camp … Scored as well off the dribble as any other player in camp … Can get into the lane and finish as well as make perimeter jump shots … Excellent length allows him to be a pesky defender … Earned second-team all-league honors in the Southern Lakes Conference as a junior.

Matt Rudig, 6-3, F, Jr., Sauk Prairie
A high energy player who competes on each and every possession on both ends of the court … Can make perimeter jump shots, but is even more effective using his physical strength, quickness and ball handling skills getting to the basket … Excellent finisher at around the hoop … Figures to be a key player for Sauk Prairie over the next two seasons after receiving substantial playing time on the varsity as a sophomore.

Ryan Sygulla, 6-2, WG, Sr., Whitehall
The biggest surprise of the 120 players at camp … A very, very solid player and an outstanding athlete … Uses superior physical strength to get into the lane and elevate over opponents for mid-range jump shots … Can also knock down shots beyond the three-point arc … Very aggressive defender who also hits the glass … Earned first-team all-league honors in the Large Schools Division of the Dairyland Conference as a junior and freshman … Missed sophomore season due to ACL injury.

Matt Van Scyoc, 6-5, WF, Soph., Green Lake
A growing wing forward who can score around the basket or facing the hoop … A rugged, physical player who competes hard on every possession … Solid athleticism and has a nose for the ball … Good rebounder and defender … Earned second-team all-conference laurels as a freshman in the Northern Division of the Trailways Conference.

Several out-of-state players performed well at the WBY Exposure Camp led by Sam Daly of Rochester, Minnesota, Lourdes; and Sam Calcagno of Rochester, Minnesota, Mayo.

Sophomores to watch from camp included Nick Arenz of Onalaska; Luke Heller of D.C. Everest; Eric Hartnett of Ozaukee; Alex Bailey of Sturgeon Bay; Peter Drummond of Racine Lutheran; Taylor Thompson of Wausau West; and Tyler Kastenschmidt of West Salem.

The three-on-three tournament was held at camp on Tuesday and the team of Zach DeBoer of Laconia, Matt Van Scyoc of Green Lake, J.J. Panoske of Brodhead, Bryan Tordoff of Monroe and Michael Barrett of Monroe won the championship.
