Observations from the third annual Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Summer Tournament held in Plymouth over the weekend:

Pools A-B

Most Valuable Player

Peter Drummond, 5-11, PG, Class of 2012, Racine Lutheran

Drummond sets the tone for Racine Lutheran on both ends of the court. His ball-hawking on-the-ball defense exemplifies what the Lutheran program is all about as he gives maximum effort on that end of the court throughout the contest. Offensively, Drummond consistently gets his teammates involved as a pass-first point guard. He is also a capable scorer and perimeter shooter as his 17 points and three second-half triples lifted Lutheran to a 51-48 come-from-behind victory over Brookfield Central in pool play.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Dylan Graf, 6-4, F, Class of 2011, Racine Lutheran –
An outstanding finisher around the basket, Graf uses aggressive moves in the paint to get to the rim. A physically strong and mobile athlete, Graf was nearly unstoppable in scoring 22 points in Lutheran’s 41-37 victory over Milwaukee South Division in the Pool A-B championship game.

Dylan Heemstra, 6-4, WF, Class of 2012, Neenah – Heemstra was able to score in a variety of ways and used his length, size and athleticism to get around defenders. With more consistency and a bit more aggressiveness, Heemstra is definitely a player capable of earning first-team all-league honors in the Fox Valley Association in 2010-11.

Konor Kulas, 6-4, F, Class of 2012, Kimberly – Though he has a ways to go in terms of physical strength and maturity, Kulas is nonetheless an effective player because of his length, skill and effort. Kulas appears to have another growth spurt in him and could emerge as a very good player for the Papermakers.

Alex Olson, 6-1, PG, Class of 2011, Brookfield Central – As competitive and hard-nosed as they come, Olson led Brookfield Central to a 2-2 record with his ability to score, find teammates and defend. Olson is the heart and soul for a Brookfield Central squad many expect to contend for the Greater Metro Conference title next winter.

Cameron Pennington, 6-2, F, Class of 2012, Milwaukee South Division – Pennington was very active throughout the weekend on both sides of the court. He showed the ability to slash to the basket while also connecting on perimeter jump shots.

Willy Plucker, 6-0, WG, Class of 2012, Kimberly – Though a bit unorthodox with his shooting form, Plucker was nonetheless an offensive machine for the Papermakers, scoring 29 points in a 49-48 victory over Appleton West and 26 in a win over Homestead. Plucker knocked down threes, got to the basket and made his free throws and figures to be one of the premier offensive threats for coach Lucky Wurtz next season.

Ryan Probst, 6-1, WG, Class of 2011, Appleton West – With point guard Kyle Neumann and forward Ben Recker out of the lineup, Probst and senior teammate Casey Kelder picked up the scoring slack for the Terrors. Probst moved over to point guard for coach Brennan Hussey and performed well, both as a distributor and scorer.

Jake Ricciardi, 6-0, PG, Class of 2012, Waukesha North – An emerging collegiate prospect who is equally effective taking the ball to the basket or knocking down perimeter shots. Needs to add weight and strength to his frame, but appears to have a bright future.

Donte Tidmore, 5-6, PG, Class of 2012, Milwaukee South Division -- Though small in stature, Tidmore more than makes up for his lack of height with quickness, physical strength and basketball I.Q. He showed the ability to knock down three-point shots, drilling four in a victory over Appleton West and adding three more in the loss to Racine Lutheran.

Mitch Unger, 6-11, PG, Class of 2011, Plymouth – Unger was the top scoring threat for Plymouth, which went 1-3 but lost to Pool A champion Milwaukee South Division by just a single point. Unger used his physical strength and skill to continually score off the dribble.

Team Champion

Racine Lutheran –
The competitive level was ratcheted up a bit for Racine Lutheran and the Crusaders responded with victories over Kimberly, Homestead, Brookfield Central and Milwaukee South Division. While point guard Peter Drummond and forward Dylan Graf get most of the acclaim for this team, this is by no means a two-man squad. Depth, toughness and love of the game are also assets for RacineLutheran which got solid performances from senior Jon Lambert, juniors Ty DeMuth, Neko Graf, Tyler Naegeli and Jared Kasmala, and sophomore Clay Stevens.

Notes

Neenah’s Adam Pohlman (5-9) showed plenty of poise and skill for an incoming freshman point guard … Neenah sophomore Nate Pronschnsike (6-1) flashed a deadly perimeter jump shot that reminded some of his father and coach, Chas Pronschinske, who was an outstanding player at UW-Stevens Point … Look for junior Jhiante Ellis (5-8) to make a strong contribution to the backcourt for the Cardinals … Appleton North played without senior center Nate Van Handel, who is out with a concussion, and senior point guard Kyle Sperl, who is playing in AAU events … Junior Trace Sonnleitner (6-4) had a solid weekend showing for Appleton North and figures to be a key player for coach Eric Eastman in 2010-11 … Homestead senior guard Tony Benford (6-0) and sophomore wing Jake Laihinen (6-2) performed well for the Highlanders.

Pool A Standings – Milwaukee South Division 4-0, Neenah 2-2, Waukesha North 2-2, Appleton North 1-3, Plymouth 1-3.

Pool B Standings – Racine Lutheran 3-1, Brookfield Central 2-2, Homestead 2-2, Kimberly 2-2, Appleton West 1-3.

Pool A vs. Pool B Title Game – Racine Lutheran 41, Milwaukee South Division 37.

Pools C-D

Most Valuable Player

Matthew Babel, 6-3, WG, Class of 2011, Lake Country Lutheran

A player who seemingly looks better and better each time he takes the court, Babel turned in a monster weekend performance for Lake Country Lutheran. He averaged a robust 26.0 points per game and made a whopping 21 shots from beyond the three-point arc while leading Lake Country Lutheran to a 5-0 record. To top it off, he banked in a half-court shot at the buzzer to trigger Lake Country Lutheran’s 34-31 victory over Mishicot in the Pool C-D title game.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Greg Boknevitz, 5-10, WG, Class of 2012, Saint Francis –
Boknevitz was a bit up-and-down for Saint Francis, but he was able to get things going at times from the perimeter and his scoring prowess figures to be a key for the Mariners in 2010-11.

Austin Coenen, 5-10, G, Class of 2011, Mishicot – Mishicot may have won just five games a year ago, but the Indians will not be an easy out in 2010-11 as they competed with toughness, grit and determination in going 4-1. One of the leaders for new coach Justin Bestor is senior guard Austin Coenen, a good, tough defender who is also a capable scorer.

Jacob Demman, 6-0, PG, Class of 2013, Lake Country Lutheran – Demman did a splendid job of running the offense for Lake Country Lutheran. He moved the ball, got into the paint and, perhaps most importantly, kept his head up against pressure defense and found Babel.

Derric Francis, 6-4, F, Class of 2011, Rio – One of the biggest surprises and most consistent performers among the 40 teams entered in the event, Francis scored in multiple ways for Rio. He made three-point shots, used his length and strength to score in the paint and converted from the foul line.

Eddie Gajdosik, 5-11, G, Class of 2011, Montello – Gajdosik led Montello in scoring over the weekend and appears poised to take over the scoring load for a Hilltoppers’ program needing to replace the 20.9 points per game put up the graduated Jake Polk a year ago.

Aaron Gosse, 6-4, WF, Class of 2011, Green Bay NEW Lutheran – Gosse is a versatile wing player who can make mid-range jump shots or take it to the rim off the dribble. He needs to add weight and strength while also getting tougher on the glass, but his skill level and size are definite assets for a NEW Lutheran squad many expect to contend for the WIAA Division 5 state title.

Trevor Jossart, 6-1, WG, Class of 2011, St. Mary Central – Jossart is a bit of a streaky perimeter shooter, but he can get on a roll from downtown. He scored 20 points to lead the Zephyrs to a 44-31 victory over Kohler. Consistency and added strength figure to be keys for Jossart in 2010-11.

Justin Lunde, 6-1, G, Class of 2012, Random Lake – Lunde and classmate Evan Rathke figure to be among the main scoring threats for coach Steve Murphy and Random Lake next season. Lunde popped in 18 points and drained a pair of three-pointers in leading the Rams to a 57-45 victory over Saint Francis.

Cal Swanson, 6-4, F, Class of 2012, Lake Country Lutheran – Swanson used his mobility and skill to score from both the perimeter and in the lane. He also did a terrific job of drawing fouls and was able to cash in from the foul line.

Kaylor Zimmerman, 6-1, PG, Class of 2011, Green Bay NEW Lutheran – Zimmerman got it going offensively in the second half of a loss to Lake Country Lutheran, scoring 18 points in 18 minutes and almost single-handily leading the Blazers to a come-from-behind victory. Zimmerman sees the floor, makes perimeter shots and competes with an edge on defense.

Team Champion

Lake Country Lutheran –
Led by the prolific scoring of Babel, Lake Country Lutheran surprised more than a few onlookers by running the table and finished 5-0 in the tournament. In addition to the scoring and aggressiveness of Babel, Lake Country Lutheran got strong performances from junior forward Cal Swanson (6-4) and promising sophomore point guard Jacob Demman (6-0).

Notes

Juniors Greg Boknevitz (5-10) and Guillermo DeDiego (5-10) figure to form a solid backcourt for coach John Kloppenburg at St. Francis next season ... Royall went 0-4, but the Panthers were highly competitive in all four contests, losing each by six points or less. Sophomore guard Sam Murphy (6-3) is an intriguing wing prospect because of his combination of size and skill … Kohler played the weekend without a pair of key players in senior Hunter Clark and junior Ryan Zittel, but senior guard Nick Tesmer turned in sold performances for coach Ken Roeder … St. Mary Central junior Michael Abrahmson (5-10) was solid in directing the Zephyrs’ offense … Mishicot senior Kyle Novak (5-8) is a tough, quick defender for the Indians.

Pool C Standings – Mishicot 4-0, Rio 3-1, Random Lake 2-2, St. Francis 1-3, Royall 0-4.

Pool D Standings – Lake Country Lutheran 4-0, Green Bay NEW Lutheran 3-1, Montello 2-2, St. Mary Central 1-3, Kohler 0-4.

Pool C vs. Pool D Title Game – Lake Country Lutheran 34, Mishicot 31.

Pools E-F

Most Valuable Player

Dylan Wodsedalek, 6-2, PG/WG, Class of 2011, North Fond du Lac

After missing a good chunk of last season with a shoulder injury, Wodsedalek is once again dominating on the basketball court. A combination guard with size, skill and intelligence, Wodsedalek is a good perimeter shooter who can also get into the lane and either score or find his teammates. In an extremely competitive 33-29 victory over St. Thomas More in pool play, Wodsedalek scored 18 points, including 11 in the second half to help the Orioles erase an eight-point halftime deficit.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Zach Bisek, 6-4, WF, Class of 2011, Arcadia –
Bisek was one of the top class of 2011 prospects in the entire tournament. He ran the floor, scored inside and outside, competed on the glass, shared the ball and defended with a purpose. A very solid player for new coach Colby Swanson.

Roman Blenski, 6-7, PF, Class of 2011, Oak Creek – Blenski has a ways to go in terms of footwork and moves in the post, but he runs the floor, plays within himself and is active on the glass on both ends of the court. His best basketball appears ahead of him as he develops more skill.

Ryan DePouw, 6-4, WF, Class of 2011, Oconto – A versatile, competitive and athletic wing player who can score from downtown or finish above the rim on aggressive drives to the basket. DePouw finished with an impressive 30 points in a 57-51 victory over Platteville.

Terrence Gardner, 6-2, WG, Class of 2013, Oak Creek – A transfer from West Allis Central, Gardner is an athletic wing guard prospect who has excellent length and bounce. He needs to get physically stronger and tougher, but those traits figure to come as he competes for coach Mike Jossie over the next three seasons.

Ashton Holzman, 6-5, F, Class of 2012, Howards Grove – Holzman came up big for Howards Grove in their 34-31 victory over Arcadia, knocking down a pair of three-point baskets and helping the Tigers hold their own on the glass.

Max McGowan, 5-10, PG, Class of 2012, Jefferson – McGowan competes with a sense of toughness and energy every time he takes the floor. Though Jefferson finished 0-4 in the event, McGowan more than did his part to keep his squad competitive in the majority of their games.

Dylan Smith-Cayo, 6-5, F, Class of 2012, Lake Mills – Smith-Cayo did a solid job of picking up the scoring slack with senior Joe Klocek out of the lineup on Saturday. When Klocek returned to the lineup on Sunday, Smith-Cayo continued to play well, hitting the glass and getting to the foul line.

Jonathan Stahr, 6-1, PG/WG, Class of 2012, St. Thomas More – Stahr is not a big scorer, but he sets the tone for the Cavaliers on both ends of the floor. A tough defender who likes to get on the floor for loose balls and a point guard who keeps his head up and finds open teammates, Stahr’s intangibles figure to go a long way in determining the success level of St. Thomas More in 2010-11.

Trevor Wattawa, 6-3, WF, Class of 2012, St. Thomas More – Wattawa is the best offensive player for a St. Thomas More squad loaded with quality juniors. Wattawa can score from the perimeter or take the ball to the basket.

Travis White, 6-0, G, Class of 2011, North Fond du Lac – White provided a good second scoring option for North Fond du Lac as he was able to hit mid-range jump shots as well as get to the foul line.

Team Champion

North Fond du Lac –
The Orioles appear capable of challenging Laconia, Omro and Kettle Moraine Lutheran for the top spot in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference despite winning just five games a year ago. Coach Pat Lloyd, who had to deal with key injuries a year ago, has an experienced squad returning, led by Wodsedalek, White and seniors Alec Seidl (6-5), Jarrod Marose (6-0), Jonathon Schalk (6-6) and Ken Wallender (5-11).

Notes

Keep an eye on Jefferson junior Sean Mueller, a physically strong 6-7 post player who could emerge as a double-double guy for coach Jay Benish down the road ... Platteville senior forward Travis Ware (6-6) scored in the lane on a consistent basis to help the Hillmen to a 2-2 record … Kiel played without standout Joey Burris, who was out on the travel-team circuit, but coach Jamie Arenz got a solid performance from senior Cody Retlich (5-10) in a victory over Lake Mills … Former Oconto standout Evan Ruechel (6-0) has transferred to Ashwaubenon.

Pools G-H

Most Valuable Player

Nick Roelse, 6-3, WG, Class of 2011, Sheboygan Falls

A physical, competitive wing guard who loves to post-up in the lane or take defenders off the dribble for pull-up, mid-range jump shots. Roelse uses his length and strength to keep opponents away from the basket on defense. A solid collegiate prospect who competes with a high basketball I.Q.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Andrew Borresen, 6-3, WG, Class of 2011, Living Word Lutheran –
A physically tough and highly competitive wing prospect, Borresen made three-point shots and got into the lane off the dribble while helping Living Word Lutheran to a 3-1 record.

Cody Giesseman, 6-3, F, Class of 2013, Sevastopol – Giesseman has excellent size and strength for such a young player and was able to use those attributes to get to the glass and score for the Pioneers.

Eric Hollow, 6-2, WG, Class of 2011, The Prairie School – Hollow boasts a picture-perfect perimeter jump shot and when he’s able to get it off, he is deadly for the Hawks. He mixes in the ability to get into the lane off the bounce, making him doubly effective for coach Lance Marifke.

Jim Huebschman, 6-4, WF, Class of 2011, Laconia – With the senior backcourt duo of Sam Mattheis and Zach DeBoer out of the lineup, Huebschman and junior Brandon Waldschmidt picked up the scoring slack for Laconia, leading the Spartans to a 2-2 record. Huebschman scored from downtown and also got into the lane and finished for coach Tom King.

Alex Janke, 5-9, PG, Class of 2011, Ozaukee – Janke uses his quickness and basketball skill to keep defenders off balance. He can make long-distance shots while also getting into the lane and dropping the ball down low to the twin-tower tandem of junior Eric Hartnett (6-5) and sophomore Stephen Street (6-4).

Danny Mallman, 6-3, WF, Class of 2012, Chilton – A promising wing prospect with solid athleticism, Mallman can score inside and outside and will need to become a big-time offensive threat for coach Corey Behnke and the Tigers in 2010-11.

Lanre Olaniyan, 5-11, PG, Class of 2012, Brookfield Academy – The Blue Knights played without senior standout Frederick Willis, but got solid performances out of Olaniyan, an intelligent lead guard who can score off the dribble, defend and locate open teammates.

Tevien Pinckney, 6-2, WG, Class of 2011, Beloit Turner – Pinckney used his superior quickness to beat defenders off the dribble all weekend long. He is able to finish above the rim in transition, and he gets off the floor quickly to snap rebounds away from opponents. With additional strength and weight along with an improved perimeter jump shot, Pinckney could emerge as an outstanding collegiate prospect.

Zach Van Engen, 5-11, PG, Class of 2012, Sheboygan Falls – Van Engen is a talented junior point guard who consistently set up his teammates while also scoring himself. A good ball handler and lengthy defender, Van Engen figures to play a prominent role for Sheboygan Falls in 2010-11.

Abel Wagner, 6-1, WG, Class of 2012, Catholic Central – Wagner gives the Hilltoppers a perimeter scoring threat and may need to take on a heavy scoring load for a team that may struggle at times to score.

Team Champion

Sheboygan Falls –
The Falcons looked every bit like a contender for the title in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference as they defended exceptionally well en route to a 5-0 record and a 47-40 victory over Ozaukee in the pool G-H title game. In addition to the all-around talents of Roelse and Van Engen, coach Eric Spielman relies heavily on the considerable talents of seniors Matt Halser (6-0) and Alex Grabowski (6-0).

Notes

Laconia sophomore southpaw Tyler Semenas (6-1) is the younger brother of former Spartan standout Derek Semenas, a redshirt freshman at UW-Green Bay … Senior point guard Jake Ertel (5-10) used his quickness and aggressiveness to get to continually get to the basket for The Prairie School … Senior guard Austin Massey (5-9) compliments Borresen very well in the backcourt for Living Word Lutheran … Catholic Central may not possess a great deal of basketball skill, but the Hilltoppers compete with passion and energy from the opening tip until the final horn sounds … Freshman Sean Clarey (6-2) appeared very comfortable while seeing major minutes for Brookfield Academy.
