Observations from the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Summer Tournament held in Kaukauna over the weekend:

Pool H – Chilton 3-1, Winneconne 3-1, Denmark 2-2, Sturgeon Bay 1-3, Kaukauna Orange 1-3.

Most Valuable Player

Zack Neumann, 6-2, Jr., WG, Peshtigo
Neumann absolutely scorched the nets in Kaukauna, finishing with a whopping 18 three-point baskets while averaging 16.4 ppg over five games. He buried six threes and scored 27 points in a victory over Pacelli, and he added six more triples and 22 points in a win over Regis. Neumann has excellent size and strength, and obviously a very sweet shooting stroke. The three-year varsity performer figures to have another big season for coach Ryan Spaulding at defending Marinette & Oconto Conference champion Peshtigo. 
 
All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Nate Abrahamson, 6-1, Sr., G, Sturgeon Bay
A returning starter who averaged 7.1 ppg for coach Jim Benesh a year ago, Abrahamson had 14 points and a couple of three-point baskets in a highly competitive 70-64 loss to Kaukauna Orange.
 
Jordan Berth, 6-3, Jr., F, Peshtigo
Berth was able to use his size and strength to score around the basket and also earn trips to the free-throw line. Berth’s ability to score around the hoop is key for Peshtigo as it forces defenses to double team him in the lane, creating openings for the sharpshooting Neumann on the perimeter.
 
Isaac Elliott, 5-11, Jr., PG/WG, Stevens Point Pacelli
A smooth and highly skilled combination guard who has excellent quickness and can make shots from the perimeter, Elliott is the leader for a young and talented squad at Pacelli that figures to make plenty of noise in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference over the next two seasons.
 
Zack Goedeke, 6-6, Jr., PF, Valders
The lone returning starter from a club that won 19 games a year ago, Goedeke is a polished big man who runs the floor, finishes at the basket and earns trips to the foul line. He figures to be the ‘go-to’ player offensively for coach Ron Nesper in 2012-13.
 
Isaac Greuel, 6-1, Sr., F, Chilton
Greuel scored in double figures in three games for the Tigers and was able to connect from downtown as well as from the mid-range.
 
Dylan Hecker, 6-2, Sr., G/F, Winneconne
The Wolves had a very productive tournament, finishing 3-1 with the lone loss a 60-57 setback to Chilton. Hecker was outstanding for Winneconne, scoring in double figure in all four games and getting to the basket on a consistent basis and either finishing or earning a trip to the foul line.
 
Toby Hegner, 6-10, Sr., F, Berlin
As usual, Hegner was outstanding for the Indians. The Creighton recruit showed off a soft shooting stroke from three-point range as well as his highly effective jump hook shot in the lane. He was able to block some shots, dominate at times on the glass and ran the floor very well throughout the event. Berlin went 11-13 a year ago, but with Hegner leading the way, look for the Indians to be vastly improved next winter. 
 
Andrew Huss, 6-3, Sr., WF, Chilton
Huss hunted his scoring opportunities all weekend, which was good news for a Chilton program that is eager to improve upon last year’s 8-16 finish. Huss is a mobile, athletic and physically tough wing forward who can score facing the basket or off of aggressive moves to the hoop.
 
Peter Schrader, 6-0, Sr., G, Berlin
Schrader came off the bench for the Indians a year ago and averaged just 2.0 ppg for coach Andy Kasuboski. But he performed very well for the Indians in Kaukauna, reaching double figures in the majority of games and earning multiple trips to the free-throw line.
 
Billy Wampler, 6-4, Soph., PG/WG, Eau Claire Regis
Wampler is a talented and athletic player who can make shots from distance as he finished with 11 triples in four games. Wampler is a bit wild at times with the ball, but with continued development of his ball handling and passing skills, he should emerge as a very good collegiate prospect.

Peshtigo
The Bulldogs enter next season with an impressive 36-game winning streak in the Marinette & Oconto Conference, and they figure to be the heavy favorite to three-peat as league champions behind the return of Neumann, Berth and senior Matt Borkovec (6-0). Peshtigo did a splendid job of sharing the ball, waiting for high-percentage shots and defending during the WBY Tournament. In the G-H title game, the Bulldogs held Chilton to just 10 second-half points and registered an 11-point victory.

Berlin senior point guard Michael Falk (5-7) did a solid job of running the show and setting up his teammates for good looks at the basket … Regis senior Nick Stanke (6-4) was attending a football camp and did not participate in the event … Regis freshman Logan Rohrscheib (5-10) is the son of former Durand and University of Wisconsin standout Amy Bauer … Pacelli junior Brett O’Sullivan (6-2) showed the ability to score around the basket and from the perimeter while also playing with a purpose on defense … Junior Forrest Fenlon (6-1) had some big scoring games for Valders and showed the ability to make shots from distance … Winneconne junior Zach Horn (5-6) made some shots from three-point range while also doing a solid running of setting up the offense from his point-guard spot … Sophomore wing guard Tanner Umentum (6-0) drilled three triples to help Denmark to a 20-point victory over Kaukauna Orange … Denmark senior Dalton Lefebvre (6-7) gives coach Bob Gaulke some much-needed size and rebounding ability in the lane … Kaukauna Orange sophomore Derek Hansen (5-10) did an outstanding job of moving without the basketball to create open looks at the basket. He delivered with several perimeter jump shots for the Ghosts … Junior Joey Sheehy (6-1) and senior Michael Taylor (5-10) turned in some solid performances for Sturgeon Bay.
