Observations from the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Summer Tournament held in Kaukauna over the weekend:

Pools A-B

Final Standings

Pool A – Seymour 4-0, Bay Port 3-1, Kimberly 2-2, Appleton East 1-3, Oshkosh Lourdes 0-4.

Pool B – Green Bay Southwest 4-0, Appleton North 3-1, Fond du Lac 2-2, Antigo 1-3, Shawano 0-4.

Pool A vs. Pool B Championship Game – Green Bay Southwest 38, Seymour 36.

Most Valuable Player

Jasen Baranowski, 6-1, Sr., G, Green Bay Southwest

Definitely a player on the rise, Baranowski finished off his junior year at Southwest with 23 points in a one-point loss to Manitowoc Lincoln during the final regular-season contest and then had 19 in a loss to Sheboygan North in the WIAA playoffs. He continued his strong play at the WBY Tournament, averaging a team-best 14.8 ppg while leading the upstart Trojans to a 5-0 record. Baranowski was at his best in Southwest’s two biggest wins, scoring 12 in the Pool A vs. Pool B title-game victory over Seymour and pouring in 18 in a narrow victory over Appleton North.

All-Tournament Team (In alphabetical order)

Ryan Albers, 6-2, Sr., G, Appleton North

Albers had a productive weekend for the Lightning, leading his squad to a 3-1 record while getting to the line, hitting from distance and leading his team in scoring. North may not overwhelm you with individual talent, but coach Eric Eastman always gets his players to compete with an edge and Albers certainly fit into that category in Kaukauna.

Peyton Armstrong, 6-1, Sr., WG, Bay Port
Armstrong played a bit in the shadow of graduated seniors Ryan Tachick and Stephen Hodgson a year ago, but the physically tough and skilled wing guard figures to blossom into the Pirates’ top scorer in 2012-13. He is able to take defenders off the dribble and connect from distance. He had a game-high 16 points to lead Bay Port to a 49-48 overtime victory over Kimberly.

Sandy Cohen, 6-5, Jr., WF, Seymour
After averaging 14.0 ppg as a sophomore for the Thunder, Cohen has added some weight and strength over the spring and summer and appears poised for a breakout junior season for coach Jon Murphy. His size, length, skill and athleticism are apparent each time he steps onto the court and should help the Thunder successfully defend their Bay Conference championship.

David Klink, 6-0, Sr., WG, Kimberly
A three-year varsity performer for coach Lucky Wurtz, Klink is a super aggressive wing guard who can zoom to the basket off the bounce or make mid-range jump shots. He was also effective from beyond the arc while helping a young Papermakers’ squad to a 2-2 record.

Aaron Moesch, 6-7, Sr., WF, Green Bay Southwest
Moesch had several NCAA Division II coaches checking out his game and he delivered one solid showing after another in helping Southwest to the Pools A-B title. A smooth and versatile performer who can score from the perimeter or in the lane, Moesch is an unselfish player who does a bit of everything to help his team win. He scores, he defends, he rebounds, he passes and he runs the floor very well. Toss in the fact he’s an outstanding student and has yet to turn 17 despite being in the class of 2013 and it’s easy to see why DII coaches are in hot pursuit.

Macauly Oreskovic, 6-2, Sr., WG, Antigo
A returning second-team all-league performer in the Great Northern Conference, Oreskovic displayed a soft shooting touch from the outside while consistently hunting his shot and moving well without the basketball. He tossed in 26 points and nailed four triples in leading Antigo past Shawano.

Dakota Oskey, 6-3, Jr., WF, Seymour
Oskey is a highly productive and consistent performer who can take defenders off the dribble and finish at the hoop or knock down perimeter jump shots from beyond the three-point arc. His confidence and toughness make him extremely effective on both ends of the court.

Turner Schmidt, 6-1, Sr., WG, Appleton East
The Patriots needed an overtime victory over Oshkosh Lourdes to avoid going 0-4 in the tournament, but Schmidt was a bright spot for coach John Mielke and the Patriots. Though he wasn’t especially prolific in the scoring column, Schmidt’s ability to make three-point shots kept the floor spread for his teammates.

Justin Schweiner, 5-11, Sr., G, Green Bay Southwest
Along with Baranowski and Moesch, Schweiner is an important component for coach Chris Karcz and the Trojans. He averaged 8.2 ppg in the Trojans’ five victories and got Southwest off to a terrific start in the title game against Seymour by drilling a pair of three-point shots.

Frank Van Handel, 6-5, Sr., F, Appleton North
Van Handel has turned in an outstanding summer thus far for the Lighting. In a highly competitive pool-play loss to Green Bay Southwest, Van Handel was solid in all facets of the game and teamed with Albers and senior Jared Dudley (6-0) to keep North within striking distance the entire contest.

Team Champion

Green Bay Southwest
Over the past decade, Southwest has finished with a record above .500 just twice, including a 12-11 mark last season. This time around, look for Southwest to push De Pere, Pulaski, Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, Manitowoc Lincoln and Sheboygan North for the crown in the highly competitive and extremely deep Fox River Valley Conference. The Trojans share the basketball, work hard on the defensive end of the floor, take care of the ball and take high percentage shots – traits that figure to keep them in every game they play in 2012-13.

Notes
Oshkosh Lourdes went winless in the tournament, but the Knights were competitive in most of their games behind strong showings from senior Dylan Sommerfeld (6-4) and juniors Sam Seibold (6-3) and Charlie Noone (6-0) … Bay Port seniors Steven Minzlaff (6-4) and Ryan Frieder (6-1) were impressive at times for the Pirates and figure to be key performers for coach Nate Rykal along with Armstrong … Fond du Lac competed without its top player as senior Max Schebel (6-4) was unavailable. Coach Adam Zakos received solid showings from junior guard Joe Schorse (6-0) and three promising sophomores in Brian Letyn (6-4), Robert Windsor (6-4) and Marcus Ruch (6-3) … Junior Dillon Frachette of Shawano was effective from long-range throughout the tournament as he connected on 12 three-points in four games for the Hawks … Freshman Zeke Guethes (6-6) of Shawano showed plenty of promise and figures to be a mainstay in coach Thadd Cornell’s lineup the next four years.
